Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a balloon to help provide additional support to misshapen vertebrae. It is done to treat vertebra that have lost their shape or stability and are causing pressure and pain on the spine. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and often patients feel pain relief almost immediately after it is complete.

The surgery is designed to help mishapen vertebra regain their stability. First, the surgeon inserts a small surgical balloon into the vertebra, and inflates it to create the space to fix the affected vertebra. Then a cement-like compsite designed to act like bone is injected in the original shape of the vertebra. Once the composite hardens, the balloon is removed and the incisions closed.
